Like many other companies, the tourism sector has also been affected by Covid-19. This is also the case with Pejego tours and current customers are advised to postpone their travel if possible. And there we are suddenly we have plenty of time! We, the entrepreneurs have to be creative during this Corona times because sitting still is not an option!

What to do during the corona crisis?
Business owners must think ahead especially during the Covid-19 period! There are always chores that need to be done, for which there was either no time or it was not possible. Pejego Tours used this Corona period to train her guides and to exchange ideas about the future. This period is the perfect time for Pejego Tours to be busy with her guides because the guides are all at home at the same time! Ideal to get started with them! Well via Zoom meetings at least because I am also stranded in Hungary because of Covid-19 and the travel guides are in Suriname!
Using Zoom to train travel guides
During the training, we discussed al lot of topics. For some guides is was a refreshment and for others doing training like this was new! The topics that were discussed during the training varied a lot; from what does the European tourist expect to what does WFTG mean! The training sessions were informative, but the input from the guides was very important! After the training sessions, I (as trainer and owner of Pejego tours) actually came to the conclusion that my guides are “The ambassadors of Suriname”! I also plan to treat them like this in the future! (hopefully, my guides won’t read this blog!)

Indoor and outdoor training
We had 4 days of training, and the ones still to come are; First Aid, birders, and mangrove training. And as it fits a good trainer, I asked the guides to fill in an evaluation form about the past training. In response to the question, what will you do differently from now on, was answered; ‘I will communicate more effectively, purposefully, use less or no plastic and involve the guests as much as possible in everything we do on tour’.
After the corona crisis, our travel guides and management team awaits you!
Note: WFTG means the World Federation of Tourist Guide and Suriname joined this NGO in December 2017 through the United Tour Guides Suriname.
