For an active, family experience in Paramaribo, choose this bike trip! Here you will find out more about the history of fort Nieuw Amsterdam and plantation Pepperpot in district Commewijne.
Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam was built in the eighteenth century to protect the various plantations near the beginning of the Suriname river against pirates and other intruders. This fort has a strategic location on the site of the Commewijne river. Both rivers come together there and flow to the Atlantic Ocean. Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam is, as you will see, built of earthen walls has an interior area inside which partially been constructed to an open-air museum.
Pepperpot was a coffee and cacao plantation. The plantation is run by the Jansen family since the nineteenth century. When you visit Plantation Pepperpot, you will see on the factory complex two old plantation homes (1808), coffee bar, and a cacao and coffee fabric. The production of coffee and cacao continued until 1996. This active day trip is nice to do if traveling as a family. Bikes for kids are also available.
This trip will last approximately 8 hours. The weather can change suddenly so make sure you have your raincoat with you!
